Fortunately, most couples are able to sort out the arrangements for care of the children:
- Usually they will reside with the mother.
- The father may see the children regularly during the week, at weekends and have them overnight.
- Birthdays and Christmases are special occasions and both parties will want to see the child / children.
- Holidays should also be considered.
- Don't forget to ask the child / children what they want.
If the separating couple cannot agree on child care arrangements it may be worthwhile writing out a year plan or using a mediator. If all else fails lawyers may need to be involved and court action taken.
